Co-Integrate Mathematics Series: Presentation on March 16th

Create for Stem LogoYou are cordially invited to attend the Co-Integrate Math Seminar Series talk on Thursday, March 16, 2023 from 12:00-1:00 pm in 115 Erickson in the CREATE Seminar space. Kristen Vroom, Saul Barbosa, and Tenchita Alzaga Elizondo will talk about: Ongoing Efforts to Promote Students' Engagement in Defining.

Thursday, March 16, 2023
12:00-1:00 p.m.
  115 Erickson Hall

ABSTRACT: In this talk, we will share some of our past, present, and future efforts to support students’ defining and conjecturing activity. We will engage in some of the tasks that we are currently implementing with two calculus students. We will also discuss two future directions of our work: optimizing our task design for the whole class setting to promote equitable participation and developing science-based motivational tasks that elicit informal ideas about calculus concepts.

There is a Zoom option if you can't attend in person; registration is required:

Vroom CoInt Group PicKristen Vroom is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education in Lyman Briggs College and the Program in Mathematics Education. Her research in undergraduate mathematics education focuses on the teaching and learning of mathematical practices such as defining, conjecturing, and proving.

Saul Barbosa is a second-year doctoral student in the Program in Mathematics Education interested in the values students have regarding the validity of mathematical proof.

Tenchita Alzaga Elizondo is a Research Associate at Portland State University. Her research primarily focuses on transforming undergraduate mathematics courses through inquiry-oriented instruction with a focus on proof-based courses.

Co-Integrate is a speaker series, jointly sponsored by the CREATE for STEM Institute and the Program in Mathematics Education, designed to support internal networking among colleagues in the College of Natural Science, College of Education, and K-12 school partners interested in the teaching and learning of mathematics in K-16 settings. This series features talks by MSU faculty and graduate students who are working on projects to improve math teaching and learning at MSU and in Michigan more broadly.

The Co-Integrate Seminar Series welcomes local K-12 teachers and administrators to all of its events.
