Graduate Student Spotlight: Valerie Sosnowski

Valerie hugging elephantPRIME is pleased to welcome first year mathematics doctoral education student, Valerie Sosnowski. Valerie is from Farmington Hills, Michigan.

Valerie completed a bachelor's degree in biological sciences and a teaching certificate in secondary math and biology from Wayne State University. Post graduation, she went on to complete a master’s degree in mathematics from Eastern Michigan University.

Valerie has been a high school math teacher for the last 11 years, and also taught college for the past two years, becoming a full-time lecturer at Kettering University.

Valerie and Spouse in ThailandWhen asked if there was anything she’d like to share, Valerie said, “I went to Thailand in June 2023 and played with the elephants and the monkeys.” She also commented that she loves animals, and has a cat named Simba! We think she is a fan of the Disney movie The Lion King!

Regarding mathematics education research, Valerie is interested in student-centered approaches to teaching and learning – more specifically, how the attitude of the students towards the teacher, the subject, their classmates, and their role or standing in the class all affects their performance. She hopes to expand this interest during her time here at PRIME.

Welcome to MSU, Valerie, and to the mathematics education community!
