PRIME at Summer 2026 Conferences
Many PRIME community members presented at or participated in conferences across the globe this summer of 2026. We invite our readers to peek into the amazing work MSU mathematics education research scholars are undertaking.
Conference attendees, lecturers, and paper and poster-presenters this summer from PRIME included Maria Cruciani, Jenny Green, Miguel Rodriguez Mejia, Andre Payadnya, Sevda Sadik, Matt Voigt and Sabrina Zarza.
ICOTS
Miguel Rodriguez Meija, Maria Cruciani, and Sabrina Zarza presented at the International Conference on Teaching Statistics (ICOTS) from July 12th through July 17th in Brisbane, Australia. This was the 12th international conference and the first time it was held in Australia. The theme for
ICOTS 12 was, What? Who? When? How? Asking questions is fundamental to fundamental to the practice and teaching of statistics
and the statistical and data science education community needs to bring collaborative
and collective wisdom, analysis and research to the what, who, when and how. ICOTS
12 invited participants to bring together analysis, expertise, examples, reflections,
ideas, research, evidence and reviews from across the world and across school, tertiary,
workplace and society contexts, to collectively consider these questions in contributing to the meaningful
nourishing of the teaching of the statistical and data sciences and their impact in
every endeavor. MSU presenters, followed by the talk title, are listed below:
- Miguel: Imagining Possibilities for Statistics in Preservice Teacher Education (refereed poster; presenter)
- Maria & Sabrina: Painted Numbers: Preservice Teachers Explore Educational Data Through Art and Data Feminism (refereed talk; co-presenters)
- Maria:
-
- Integrating Statistics in Secondary Mathematics Curricula: Challenges and Opportunities for Preparing Today’s and Tomorrow’s Teachers (refereed talk; coauthor)
-
- Resources for developing beginning statistics instructors’ teaching capacity in tertiary education (refereed talk; coauthor)
-
- Exploring Graduate Teaching Assistants’ Conceptualizations of Equitable Teaching (refereed talk; presenter)
eCOTS
Maria Cruciani and Miguel Rodriguez Mejia presented a virtual poster at the electronic Conference on Teaching Statistics (eCOTS). The 2026 Electronic Conference on Teaching Statistics (eCOTS) theme was "Sparking Joy and Discovery In a World of AI". The theme invited all to explore the impact of AI on instruction and assessment for statistics and data science courses. eCOTS, an online conference organized by the Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education (CAUSE) was held from June 15-18th. Maria & Miguel co-authored and presented their poster, “Exploring Students' Perceptions of Generative AI Use in Mathematical Statistics”

MAA MathFest
Sevda Sadik presented in two themed categories in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) 2026 MathFest in Boston, Massachusetts. The MAA MathFest has a robust, informative
program with a series of quality mathematical sessions suitable for all those interested
in mathematics, including university faculty members, high school teachers, as well
as both graduate and undergraduate students. Mathematical sessions for the 2026 meeting
ran from August 5th through 8th.
The first theme was, “Rewriting Who Counts: Centering A Broader Array of Mathematicians in the Curriculum.” Sevda presented, “Leveraging Language Arts to Teach Math History.”
The second theme was, “Future Directions in PreK-12 Math Teacher Preparations.” Sevda presented as secondary author, “Recontextualizing Math for Global Application: Algebra as a Tool for Understanding Climate Education.”

Visiting Lecture at UNMAS
Another exciting endeavor this summer was Matt Voigt’s Visiting Lecture at PRIME student Andre Payadnya’s university, in Indonesia, Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar (UNMAS), which was held on August 7th.

The event was organized by the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar, in collaboration with the Program in Mathematics Education (PRIME), College of Natural Science, Michigan State University. It was held in a hybrid format at the Ganesha Auditorium, with approximately 100 participants attending in person and 571 participants joining via Zoom from different regions across Indonesia. The Visiting Lecture and Community Service program was titled “Building Interdisciplinary STEM Education.” The event aimed to facilitate academic discussion and the exchange of ideas related to education and research, create opportunities for international collaboration in teaching and research, and strengthen institutional and academic networks between the universities.

Andre notes, “My colleagues at UNMAS were very happy to welcome Matt, and we hope this visit can serve as a starting point for more collaboration between UNMAS, PRIME, and MSU in the future.”
PRIME faculty and students were quite busy sharing their research over the summer. We look forward to more conversations about your work and travels!
