Teaching Assistant Programs

The Office of the Provost and the Graduate School sponsor teaching professional development experiences for all MSU teaching assistants (TAs).  Before the fall semester begins, the Teaching Assistant Program offers:

  • International Teaching Assistant Orientation and Program
  • New TA Institute

MSU provides multiple teaching resources for graduate students and postdocs throughout the year, including:

Several of our mathematics education doctoral students have been FAST Fellows - Future Academic Scholars in Teaching. The primary goals of the FAST Fellowship Program are to provide opportunities for a diverse group of graduate students to have mentored teaching experiences and to gain familiarity with materials on teaching and assessment techniques.

MSU also offers Certification in Teaching College Science and Mathematics. It is a voluntary program to prepare graduate students in the College of Natural Science for careers in post-secondary education while enhancing the quality of their teaching at Michigan State. This program is part of an all-University program for Certification in College Teaching. The requirements provide background and training in the teaching of science and mathematics at the college level. The program includes course work, workshops and seminars. The program also requires a mentored teaching experience and the development of a teaching portfolio. The certificate earned by the participating students and the materials developed in the teaching portfolio will assist graduates seeking employment in an increasingly competitive job market.
