Abstract: Active learning has become a well-established pedagogy for improving student learning in undergraduate mathematics courses. However, this shift in teaching has transformed the classroom in important ways, including increased attention to participation. This raises questions about what participation means for different members in the classroom and the relationship between active learning and equitable participation.
In this talk, I share insights from the stories students of color have shared with me about participating in undergraduate mathematics courses. In exploring their stories, I highlight what participation means to them, how deficit narratives and dominant discourses seemed to affect their participation, and finally the role of language and culture in shaping classroom experiences. I end this talk with some implications for teaching, along with a few questions I have been reflecting on about centering students of color in active learning spaces.
Bio: Dr. Jocelyn Rios is an assistant professor of mathematics education at the University of Northern Colorado. Her research lies in undergraduate mathematics education. She is interested in learning how to center students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds in the mathematics classroom, particularly at Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs). This includes thinking about curriculum, teaching practices like active learning, and community outreach programs. In addition to her work on active learning, Dr. Rios has worked on several projects to develop place-based, culturally responsive curriculum that center themes from the Borderlands. Finally, Dr. Rios enjoys organizing bilingual family math nights at local schools.
The Program in Mathematics Education sponsors this event.
