Spotlight on Sevda Sadik
Sevda Sadik (they/them), a first-year mathematics education doctoral student, was
born and raised in Monmouth County, Central Jersey, NJ. They like walking, hiking,
playing video games and other recreational sports. Sevda has developed recent likings
for billiards and pickleball too! They said, “I go to concerts and museums quite often
and find fun events to go to with friends, like rodeos, flea markets, wrestling, really
anything!”
Most recently they spent a few days in Ireland and Scotland (see photos below). In the past, they visited Turkey, Cyprus, England, Switzerland, Canada, and a bunch of states here in the US!

Sevda grew up as an athlete. While talking about their immense passion in sports,
they mentioned, “my main sport was soccer and I dabbled in basketball and tennis,
but will play just about anything recreationally!” Sevda can be seen on a zipline
course in the image at the right. They are recently more into artistic things. Over
the past two years, they attended art classes through their local library and arts
society.
Sevda completed their B.S. in both Mathematics and Mathematics Secondary Education. Next, they finished their M.Ed in Integrative STEM Education from The College of New Jersey, and a Supervisor Certification from Monmouth University.
Just before joining PRIME, Sevda was in charge of the math tutoring services as a coordinator of the Math Learning Center at Monmouth University. They were an Adjunct Mathematics Professor at the same university, at The College of New Jersey, and at Brookdale Community College. They also have experience as a middle school mathematics teacher, an SAT instructor, a freelance lesson and professional development designer, and a tutor.
Sevda is passionate about working with in-service educators, and has interests in professional development at the collegiate level, specifically towards adjuncts with non-education backgrounds. At the secondary level, they want to work with professionals focused on building literacy using mathematics, meeting key student needs in the domains of cultural relevancy, socioemotional concerns, and collaboration.

About their aspiration in mathematics education research work at PRIME, Sevda shared, “I am really excited to learn more about what is out there.”
Welcome to MSU, Sevda! We are so excited that you are here, and look forward to seeing where your research interests take you over these next few years!
