Green Receives CNS Outstanding Academic Advisor Award

Jenny Green PhotoDr. Jennifer Green, a faculty member in the Department of Statistics and Probability (STT) and PRIME, is a recipient of a 2024-25 Outstanding Academic Advisor Award from the College of Natural Science. This award recognizes academic advisors who “have shown exceptional expertise in advising graduate or undergraduate students in the college.” Along with the recognition, recipients also receive a $1,000 monetary award. Dr. Green received the Outstanding Academic Advisor Award at the NatSci Annual Faculty Meeting and Awards Ceremony on November 15th.

Nominated by Maria Cruciani, a PRIME doctoral student, Dr. Green was described as a hard-working and strongly passionate advisor who creates supportive environments that allow her students to grow and become better scholars. Cruciani was supported by Dr. Green even before her doctoral program started. Cruciani’s nomination of Dr. Green tells the story of how before arriving at MSU, Dr. Green assisted her in creating a 5-year coursework plan, they discussed specific teaching and research assistantships that would help establish her as a statistics educator, and she also helped to enhance Cruciani’s National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship proposal by helping to bring Cruciani’s research skills to the graduate level. Cruciani described many other experiences that illustrate how Dr. Green supports her students and emphasized, “I cannot believe how much I have grown and achieved under Dr. Green’s mentorship in only a semester and a half, and I look forward to working with her more as I pursue my doctoral degree."

Cruciani elaborated on how Dr. Green excels in her numerous MSU responsibilities of teaching, research, and service. Some of these activities highlighted here include developing and teaching a new math ed doctoral course, leading a year-long instructional mentoring program in STT, working with several other universities on an NSF grant, organizing and facilitating a Statistics and Data Science Education Seminar between MSU and several universities, mentoring doctoral students in PRIME and STT, being an active scholar in the statistics education community, serving on department, college and university committees, and last but not least, chairing a search committee for two new open-rank faculty positions across units.

Congratulations, Dr. Green! Your work here at MSU and in particular in PRIME and STT is greatly appreciated, and the Outstanding Academic Advisor Award is well-deserved!
