MSU Math Ed at 2024 AMTE
The 2024 Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) Conference will take place February 8-10 in Orlando, Florida. The Annual AMTE Conference provides inclusive opportunities for a diverse community of mathematics educators to share current research and practice findings. AMTE is the largest professional organization devoted to the improvement of mathematics teacher education.
Several Michigan State University mathematics education faculty and graduate students are attending and presenting their research at the twenty-eighth annual AMTE Conference. Those participating are Gail Burrill, Sandra Crespo, Jennifer Green, Jermaine Howell, Sheila Orr, and Kathryn “Katie” Westby.
Katie Westby will be presenting first, on Community and Learning for Teacher Candidates with Diagnostic Labels and “will describe the outcomes and design of a professional development for disabled teacher candidates about inclusive pedagogies and professional sustainability. The relationships built supported the candidates’ integration of disparate learning across their programs with their own developing professional identity.” Katie is presenting her research on Thursday, February 8th from 1:15 pm – 2:15 pm in Salon 19.
In a joint presentation with Jennifer Green, Department of Statistics and Probability and PRIME, Katie and Jenny will present Teacher Learning about Disability in Mathematics, Statistics, and Mathematics Education Classrooms. They will be discussing “...a professional development about inclusion and antideficit, Anti-ableist teaching for mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education doctoral student teaching assistants, offering strategies for inter-program collaboration and developing anti-deficit and anti-ableist approaches to mathematics teacher and teacher educator development.” This session will be offered on Friday, February 9th from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm in Salon 16.
Gail Burrill will be presenting Statistical Literacy and Communication: Implications for Teachers and reviewing how communication in the modern day is vital – noting, however, that little effort is put towards effective writing communication. Gail’s session will “consider characteristics of a good statistical/mathematical story and strategies to help learners develop skills to communicate data-based information.” This session will take place on Thursday, February 8th from 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm in Salon 20.
Sandra Crespo, Sheila Orr, and Jermaine Howell will be discussing A Beginning Conversation about Days After Pedagogy in Mathematics Teacher Education where they will “focus on ‘Days After Pedagogy’ as a framework that supports asset-based and justice-oriented mathematics education. They will also engage with teaching artifacts to together unpack the components of enacting days after pedagogy in the context of mathematics education.” This presentation will occur on Friday, February 9th from 8:30 am – 9:30 am in Salon 16.
The schedule for all Michigan State University presenters at the AMTE Conference is listed below.
