Graduate Student Post: Sabrina Zarza
PRIME is thrilled to introduce another first-year mathematics education doctoral student, Sabrina Zarza. Sabrina is originally from Anaheim, California, just a few exits away from Disneyland! She lived in the Orange County area up until moving to Michigan.
Sabrina mentioned, “Moving to Michigan has been quite the adventure for this Californian!” Traveling from California to Michigan is definitely a lengthy trip!
Before coming to PRIME, Sabrina attended Fullerton Community College where she received her Associates degree. She then went on to California State University, Fullerton where she acquired her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. After several years of working as a high school math teacher and hairstylist, she returned to her alma mater and earned her Master's degree in Mathematics.
Sabrina noted that her research interests as of now include policy, curriculum, urban education, participatory action research, and incarcerated youth. Although she did express, “Next month might be different!”
After Sabrina completes her doctoral degree from PRIME, she anticipates participating in a variety of exciting activities. She revealed, “I see myself doing TedTalks! But my primary goal is to help change the system that is making mathematics unobtainable to populations of students.”
To fill her free time Sabrina enjoys building things and playing board games. She has always enjoyed being a part of the Math Clubs at schools she attended and schools where she taught.
Sabrina also shared one of her thoughts about a favorite culinary delight. She exclaimed, “I think tacos and french-fries are the best food combination on the entire planet.”
PRIME is delighted to welcome Sabrina to the program, and we are eager to see all that she will accomplish while attending MSU. Additionally, we are intrigued to hear about other new food combinations she will introduce to us—stay tuned!
Welcome to PRIME, Sabrina!
