MSU Math Ed at 2022 AERA Annual Meeting
Kristen Bieda and Corey Drake, MSU Math Ed Faculty members, will be presenting their research at the upcoming American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting. This event will begin on Thursday, April 21st, and end on Tuesday, the 26th of April. This conference is not only offered online, but is also giving attendees the choice to attend in person in the warm city of San Diego, California.
AERA hosts the world’s largest gathering of educational researchers. AERA, a national research society, strives to advance knowledge about education, to encourage scholarly inquiry related to education, and to promote the use of research to improve education and serve the public good.
The theme of the conference this year is Cultivating Equitable Education Systems for the 21st Century. This theme highlights, “providing widespread access to transformative teaching and learning; creating learning spaces that respect the humanity and brilliance of all students and support them in developing their full potential; providing experiences rooted in respect for the cultural, emotional, and identity-related nature of learning; and preparing young people and adults to imagine and create a more just and sustainable society.”
AERA President Na’ilah Suad Nasir stated in the video on the annual meeting theme that she hopes that this year's conference theme can help the group accomplish several things:
- help us "deepen our commitment to using our work, our scholarship, in the service of creating and sustaining equitable education systems";
- the hope that attendees will be able to "find new ways to work together across disciplines, across sub fields, across methodological traditions. We need all of us to work effectively on the pressing problems of education";
- further develop how attendees work with practitioners; and
- support attendees in being together in community.
She continued, “The 2022 theme is about rethinking the role of our field and the nature of our research. It is about giving ourselves the permission to do our very best work and to do so from a place of respect and humility.” She closes by stating, “creating important changes in our field and in education is all of our work to do together!”
The six-day conference will be filled with ideas, engagement, networking and professional advancement.
