PRIME Welcomes 3 Doctoral Students in Fall 2021
PRIME is delighted to welcome three new outstanding mathematics education doctoral students this fall: JoseÌ Saul Barbosa, Anthony Dickson and Ashley Fabry.
Saul completed his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics at the University
of Texas, San Antonio where he worked under the supervision of Dr. Priya V. Prasad.
He is interested in improving the teaching and better understanding of underrepresented
undergraduate mathematics students, and to make mathematics more accessible, inclusive,
and equitable for undergraduate students while allowing the opportunities to students
of all levels of education to participate in research.
Anthony received his master’s degree in Mathematics and his bachelor’s degree in
Mathematics and English/Film Studies at Youngstown State University in Ohio.â¯
Anthony is interested in studying students’ abilities to learn and understand algebraic and proof-based concepts, as well as furthering his knowledge on educational literature. He also wants to research teaching methods through readings and actively teaching students.
Ashley holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from University of Wisconsin, Stevens
Point. She has been teaching high school mathematics in Wisconsin for the past 6 years.
Her goal is to become a preservice mathematics education professor for K-12 teachers.
She would like to research ways to bring more relevance to math classrooms to improve
students’ math identity and give them a sense of belonging and empowerment She is
also interested in literacy in mathematics and curriculum. She has been conducting
teacher action research on how to use relevant, real world data to improve students’
math identities.
